What are the causes of a gum abscess?

  • A gum abscess develops when there is a bacterial infection amid the teeth and gums gap. In some cases, the formation of gum abscess may result from periodontitis disease that happens due to bad oral hygiene.

  • Gum disease occurs when plaque accumulates below the gums leading to swollen gums or sore gums. Plaque is a thin, clingy layer of bacteria, if it is not removed on daily basis, it becomes hardened and may convert into tartar. In such cases, it becomes difficult to remove the tartar by brushing and flossing. Eventually, this condition results in the formation of infection in the surrounding tissue leading to an abscess.

  • Moreover, a gum abscess can also develop because of a deep periodontal pocket. It is space developed surrounding the teeth due to gum disease. This space becomes the house of bacteria as they get food stuck in that gaps. Such condition makes them thrive.
  • If people have a weaker immune system, they can have a gum abscess because their immune system becomes unable to fight against bacteria and infections.

How to diagnose a gum abscess?

When you feel gum pain, soreness, or a bad taste in your mouth, should not avoid these indications. Contact your dentist as earlier as possible. Your dentist will definitely identify the gum abscess based on your signs and symptoms.

During the appointment, your dentist will examine your gums and will see if there are signs of infection. These may include pain, soreness, and redness. Your dentist may prescribe a dental X-ray to determine whether you have periodontal disease or an infected tooth that occurs due to the infected pulp in the mouth.

Gum Abscess Treatment:

There are the following treatment steps given below that will be followed by your doctor:

  • The treatment will start with the draining of the abscess and removal of the debris from your periodontal pocket.
  • Your dentist may suggest deep cleaning procedures known as dental scaling and root planing. The following procedure will help remove plaque and tartar above and below the gumline.
  • Your doctor can use your dental X-ray to decide that the gum abscess won’t lead to bone loss. If there is something like that you will be recommended a procedure to regenerate the lost bone or gum tissue.
  • It may possible that the gum abscess will affect the pulp that is on the center of the tooth. Since the pulp comprises blood vessels, nerves, and connective tissue. If the pulp becomes infected, you will be recommended for a root canal to eliminate the infected part of the tooth.

If you experience any indication of gum disease, consult your dentist immediately.
